This week in B1G Football
Much of this week’s Big Ten schedule is unranked, regional action with a conference total of 15 games from Friday night through Saturday — but there are a few B1G games this week the team wouldn’t miss for anything:
No. 7 Oregon vs. Boise State
(7pm Pacific, streaming on Peacock)
Count us out for your Saturday wedding, housewarming, dead car battery, Tupperware party, etc. — Don’t call; don’t text while this game is going!
Oregon and Boise State are processing very different season-opener vibes.
Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty put a beast-mode clinic on tape in Week 1 with 20 carries, 267 rush yards, and 6 touchdowns.
Against Idaho, Oregon was missing the game-breaking performance it wanted — and QB1 Dillon Gabriel’s 41 of 49 passing for 380 yards and two touchdowns gave the Ducks what they needed for the win.
Oregon has more wholesale roster talent than Boise State — but Week 2 will likely require a star player or three to deliver SportsCenter numbers.
Hype train rolling!
(Colorado at Nebraska: 430pm Pacific on NBC)
Nebraska will likely give Coach Prime an even stiffer challenge than North Dakota State did last week — Colorado 31, N. Dakota State 26.
We’ll be watching for our first meaningful scout of 2024 Nebraska, and if this is the week music stops for Colorado’s unwarranted confidence — well hey, bonus narrative in the weekend news cycle.
Ranked vs. ranked
(No. 3 Texas at No. 10 Michigan: 9am Pacific on FOX)
Their first regular-season meeting ever is a top-10 matchup at The Big House. This test will go a long way in showing what defending national champ Michigan brings to the 2024 season after significant player and coach turnover since former coach Jim Harbaugh’s departure to the NFL.
In-state rivalry
(IowaSt at No. 21 Iowa: 1230pm Pacific on CBS)
One of the season’s early in-state rivalries — the opening Vegas line favored Iowa by a field goal.
Reality check
(MichiganSt at Maryland: 1230pm Pacific on BTN)
This early Big Ten test could start to reveal whether Michigan State hired a legit coach or just a guy from Oregon State they think can beat Oregon once or twice a decade.
